The history of First Baptist Church can be traced back to April 1786 when the small congregation began meeting at the home of Revolutionary war Captain Elijah Hunter. The congregation was incorporated as a New York State American Baptist Church in 1790.

The present Victorian Stick-Gothic church building was dedicated on June 3, 1874, and was the second building to stand on this site located in the center of the village triangle. The cost was $75,000. The land was given to the congregation by Elijah Hunter, one of the founders of the church and of the village. The architect was J. Walsh of Brooklyn, NY, and the contractor was John Hoff of Ossining.

Two significant features of the building, in addition to its Gothic design and the beautifully carved interior woodwork, are the steeple and the stained glass windows. For a detailed interactive look at these wonderful windows click here.
