The history of First Baptist Church can be traced back to April
1786 when the small congregation began meeting at the home of
Revolutionary war Captain Elijah Hunter. The congregation was
incorporated as a New York State American Baptist Church in 1790.
The present Victorian Stick-Gothic church building was dedicated
on June 3, 1874, and was the second building to stand on this
site located in the center of the village triangle. The cost was
$75,000. The land was given to the congregation by Elijah Hunter,
one of the founders of the church and of the village. The architect
was J. Walsh of Brooklyn, NY, and the contractor was John Hoff
of Ossining.
Two significant features of the building, in addition to its
Gothic design and the beautifully carved interior woodwork, are
the steeple and the stained
